We completed our APL writing assessments in class today.  Students also put the finishing touches on their Fall of Rome history projects and two groups presented today.  For homework students have the following:

Homework:

Students need to write 10 complex sentences.  5 sentences need to begin with an independent clause (complete sentence) and 5 with an dependent (fragment) clause.  They must use correct capitalization and punctuation.  They have in their spiral notebook sentence starters for beginning a complex sentence with a dependent clause.

Spelling Test for Wednesday

Look up and bring in 3 reviews.  The reviews can be on books, video games, movies, recipes, restaurants, etc.  The review should not be on their book they are reading, they will be writing their own view for that :).

In history textbook, read pages 36-40, answer questions 1-4. Page 41. Answer evaluating question on page 41.

  • Homework: CLOSE read “Late Paleolithic People of……” article.  Students were each given one article (East Africa, Middle East, or Eastern Europe) to read closely….underlining important parts, circling words that are unknown, and being able to tell their group the “gist” of the article.

September 18, 2014

As we have been working through our history group project, I noticed that students were having difficulty using evidence to back up their theories as to why Rome fell.  So, we did a lesson today on close reading of a text, and forming evidencce-based claims from the text.  We read part of the text in class (the first 5 paragraphs) twice and students saw an example of how to form evidence based claims.  For their homework, they are do read the rest of the text “Commonwealth Club Address” by Ceasar Chavez and complete the Forming Evidence-Based Claims worksheet.  They should read the text at least twice.  Commonwealth club address
